What a kurta set actually contains

"Kurta set" is used loosely, and the ambiguity costs importers money at the quoting stage. Fix the definition in your RFQ and the price comparison between suppliers becomes meaningful.

ConfigurationPiecesFabric consumptionFOB effect vs 3-piece
Kurta only12.2–2.8 m−42% to −48%
Kurta + bottom (2-piece)24.0–4.8 m−18% to −24%
Kurta + bottom + dupatta (3-piece)36.2–7.6 mBaseline
Kurta + bottom + dupatta + inner/slip47.4–9.0 m+9% to +14%

Bottom style also moves the number. A straight pant consumes far less than a palazzo, and a sharara or a gathered flared pant can add a full metre to the set. Specify the bottom by name, not as "pant".

Ten silhouettes available

Straight kurta set

Straight-cut kurta with side slits, straight or tapered pant, 2.2–2.5 m dupatta. The highest-volume shape and the safest first order.

A-line kurta set

Flared from bust to hem. Forgiving across body types, which matters when you are selling online and cannot control fit feedback.

Anarkali set

Fitted yoke with a heavily gathered floor-length flare. Occasion wear; the highest fabric consumption in the range and the highest retail price point.

Angrakha set

Overlapping cross-tie front with an inner tie. Reads distinctly handcrafted and sells well in Western boutique and museum-shop channels.

Kaftan-style set

Loose, minimal shaping, wide sleeve. Very low sewing cost per metre and a strong resort/loungewear crossover in Gulf and Australian markets.

Short kurti + palazzo

Knee-length kurti with wide-leg palazzo. The daily-wear workhorse for the diaspora retail channel.

Kurta + sharara co-ord

Gathered, flared sharara bottom. Festive and wedding-guest positioning at a lower price than an equivalent lehenga.

Flared / Nayra-cut set

Panelled flare below a fitted yoke. Currently the fastest mover on Indian marketplaces and a good bellwether for what the diaspora will want next season.

Jacket kurta set

Straight kurta with a printed or embroidered overlay jacket. Layer-friendly for autumn/winter in the UK, Canada and Northern Europe.

Asymmetric-hem set

High-low or angled hem. Small volume, high margin, useful for differentiating a private-label range from open-market goods.

Fabrics, prints and craft techniques

The craft technique is what an overseas buyer is really paying for. Two kurta sets in identical cotton can differ by 3x in FOB depending on whether the print was hand-blocked over four days or screen-printed in an hour. Both are legitimate; sell the right one to the right channel.

On hand block: slight variation in registration and colour depth between pieces is inherent to the process, not a defect. Say so on the hangtag and in your listing copy — buyers who understand it pay a premium; buyers who do not raise claims. We supply a standard craft statement you can print.

The dupatta decision

The dupatta is where a set's perceived value is won and where a quotation most often goes wrong. Four variables move both cost and how the set photographs.

  • Fabric — cotton mulmul (matching, everyday), soft net (contrast, party wear), Chanderi (occasion), Kota doria (light, textured), bandhani or leheriya (craft premium).
  • Length — 2.2 m is the commercial standard; 2.5 m drapes noticeably better on camera and on the shelf and costs very little more.
  • Edge finish — plain hem, four-side piping, tassels/latkan, lace, pom-pom, or hand-knotted fringe. Tassels alone add roughly USD 0.35–0.80 per set and lift the perceived price band far more.
  • Print relationship — matching (safe), tonal (modern), or contrast (highest visual impact in a marketplace thumbnail). Contrast dupattas consistently out-click matching ones.

Buyer tip: if you are selling online, spend the extra on 2.5 m length and a tasselled contrast dupatta before you spend it anywhere else on the set. It is the single cheapest change that improves the listing image, and listing image drives everything downstream.

Sizing for export markets

Indian ethnic sizing does not map cleanly onto US or EU labels, and mis-mapping is the leading cause of returns on kurta sets sold into Western markets. We grade to whichever chart you nominate and label accordingly.

India sizeBust (in)USUKEUNotes
XS (34)342634Low volume outside India
S (36)364836
M (38)3861038Peak size in India
L (40)4081240Peak size in UK/UAE
XL (42)42101442Peak size in USA/Canada
2XL (44)44121644Strong in USA diaspora
3XL (46)46141846Add +2 cm sleeve opening

For US and Canadian programmes we recommend shifting the size ratio up: a 1-2-3-3-2-1 curve across S–3XL rather than the India-standard bell centred on M. Kurta length also runs short for Western frames — add 2–4 cm to body length above L unless you are selling primarily to the diaspora.

From artwork to container

  1. Day 0 — RFQ. Send a reference image, a fabric preference and a target FOB. You get a costing sheet within 24 hours.
  2. Day 2–5 — Print development. Block carving for a new hand-block design takes 3–5 days; screen exposure takes one. Strike-offs are couriered plus photographed under standardised light.
  3. Day 6–16 — Sampling. Fit sample, then a pre-production sample in bulk fabric with the final dupatta and trims. Wash test before approval, never after.
  4. Day 17 — PI & deposit. 30% advance, balance against copy Bill of Lading or L/C at sight.
  5. Day 18–40 — Bulk. Fabric printing runs first with a bulk approval swatch to you before cutting. Inline inspection at 30% and 70% stitched.
  6. Day 41–44 — Final inspection. AQL 2.5 / 4.0, buyer's nominated third party welcome. Set completeness (kurta + bottom + dupatta, correct size in all three) is a 100% check, not a sample check.
  7. Day 45–48 — Documentation and despatch through the Wedge Group export desk.

Selling Indian ethnic wear abroad

USA & Canada

Two distinct channels. Diaspora retail buys the familiar shapes in larger size ratios and reorders monthly; mainstream boutique and Faire buyers want the craft story, smaller assortments and sizes graded to US charts. Do not serve them from the same range.

United Kingdom

The most mature non-Indian market for kurta sets. Buyers expect consistent sizing across repeats and increasingly ask for the artisan cluster by name. Jacket sets and Chanderi occasion wear carry the season from September.

UAE & Gulf

High reorder frequency, strong festive peaks around Ramadan, Eid and Diwali — book fabric 10–12 weeks ahead of those windows. Kaftan-style and Anarkali sets outperform.

Germany, Netherlands & EU

Sustainability-led. Natural-dye dabu, handloom ikat and GOTS-route cotton open doors that a printed polyester-blend set never will. Expect questions about the dyehouse, not just the stitching unit.

Australia

Counter-seasonal to the northern hemisphere — your Indian summer range ships into their summer. Useful for levelling factory load across the year.

Buying cotton kurta sets in India (domestic wholesale)

This is one of the fastest-growing ethnic-wear searches in India: the kurta and kurti cluster draws roughly 1.42 million searches a month, and — unusually — about 43% of that demand sits in keywords that are growing year on year, the strongest growth signal of any apparel category we track. "Cotton kurta set for women" alone sits in Google's highest search-volume bracket. If you are an Indian retailer, boutique or marketplace seller, the same units serve you domestically.

Indicative planning figures, not a quotation. Marketplace commission, returns and marketing typically absorb 25–35% of MRP in Indian D2C — ethnic wear sits at the higher end of that band because fit-driven returns are common. Build it in before you set a price.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for cotton kurta sets?

300 sets per design for export, or 150 sets per design on hand-block repeats where the block is already carved. Domestic supply within India starts at 100–150 sets depending on the fabric.

Does the price include the dupatta?

Only if you specify a three-piece set. Quote comparisons between suppliers are frequently apples-to-oranges for exactly this reason — always state kurta + bottom + dupatta, name the bottom style, and give the dupatta fabric and length in your RFQ.

Is hand block printing consistent piece to piece?

No, and it should not be. Registration variance of about ±3 mm and slight differences in colour depth are inherent to hand blocking and are what distinguishes it from screen print. We supply a craft statement for your hangtag and listing so the variance reads as authenticity rather than a defect.

How long does production take?

21–30 days after sample approval for a standard first order, plus 10–14 days for sampling. A new hand-block design adds 3–5 days for block carving. Container programmes run 35–45 days.

Can you grade to US or UK sizing?

Yes. We grade to whichever chart you nominate and label accordingly. For US and Canadian programmes we recommend shifting the size ratio toward L–2XL and adding 2–4 cm to kurta body length above size L.

Do you offer exclusive prints?

Yes. We carve blocks or expose screens to your artwork and hold the design exclusively to you. CAD repeat development and colourway extension are included free above 1,000 sets.

Which HS code applies to cotton kurta sets?

6204.42 covers women's dresses of cotton and is the usual heading for a kurta; the bottom and dupatta may classify separately depending on how the set is entered, and 6211.42 applies to certain other cotton garments. Cotton content below 85% changes the sub-heading. Confirm with your customs broker before booking.

Do natural dyes bleed?

Bagru dabu and other natural-dye processes release some excess colour on the first wash. That is expected and we disclose it on the care label with a cold separate-wash instruction. Fastness after the first cycle tests at grade 3–4 on ISO 105-C06.
