Is fibre cement tile backer board better than gypsum-based backer?
In wet areas, yes: fibre cement passes ISO 8336 soak-dry testing and does not soften, powder or grow mould when a tanking membrane is nicked. Gypsum backers depend entirely on their facing; fibre cement is the same waterproof matrix all the way through.
Do I need to waterproof over the board?
In showers and full wet rooms, tank the board joints and penetrations as per your local code — the board itself is unaffected by water, and tanking protects the structure behind it. In splash zones outside showers most codes accept direct tiling.
What tile weight can the board carry?
Up to about 60 kg/m2 on walls with fixings at 300 mm centres — enough for 10 mm porcelain and most natural stone. For floors use the 9 mm grade bedded solid, and prime the face if the adhesive maker asks for it.
